Is the Zeppelin NT a lighter-than-air or a heavier-than-air aircraft?
Some people say, the Zeppelin NT is a lighter-than-air aircraft. This is not quite right. The Zeppelin NT takes off with a static weight of approx. 350 kg (772 lbs). Therefore, it is heavier than air.
A hot-air balloon is a lighter-than-air aircraft. The Zeppelin NT climbs using its three engines, whereas a balloon solely climbs by means of helium or hot air.
It is, however, possible to transfer from a heavier-than-air to a lighter-than-air state, when the Zeppelin NT after a long flight has consumed so much fuel that it gets lighter than air.
How many Zeppelins are there?
For the time being, there are three Zeppelin NT 07 airships in use in three continents.
- Nippon Airship Corporation operates a Zeppelin NT in Japan.
- ZLT operates a Zeppelin NT in southern Africa on a special mission for industrial purposes.
- The Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei operates the third Zeppelin NT for commercial passenger flights and special missions. Since August 2001, over 60.000 passengers have been flying with this airship.
The fourth Zeppelin NT 07 is under construction at this time. It will probably have started its commercial passenger flight operation from Friedrichshafen by mid-2008.
Does the Zeppelin have anything to do with the Cargolifter?
There have never been any business relations to the Cargolifter company.
After the Cargolifter became insolvent, the purchase of the immaterial goods prompted the Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH to reactivate and support research projects for developping larger airships. For this reason, a "Lighter-than-Air" Institute with offices in Friedrichshafen and Cottbus will be set up that will be cooperating with the Cottbus University, the FH Wildau, the TU Dresden, the TU Stuttgart and the Zeppelin University Friedrichshafen as well as the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) based upon an Agreement of Cooperation. On the basis of the know-how aquired during the current Zeppelin program as well as from the former Cargolifter program, the "Lighter-than-Air" Institute will be established as an international competence centre for airship technology.
